Bangladesh is to relocate thousands of Rohingya refugees to an island camp, raising concerns that the persecuted community is being moved further out of sight against its will.
The announcement comes as a new report describes the brutality of the people smuggling trade moving an exodus of Bangladeshi and Rohingya refugees towards Malaysia, with traffickers forcing girls as young as thirteen onto their crowded boats.
Bangladesh is home to 32,000 registered Rohingya refugees, mostly sheltering in two camps in the southeastern district of Cox's Bazar.
On Wednesday, Amit Kumar Baul, a government official, said preparations are underway to relocate the inhabitants to Hatiya island in the Bay of Bengal.
The plan, which dates back to November, is partly prompted by concerns that the camps have held back tourism in Cox's Bazar, where locals flock to beach hotels and resorts. Full story...
