Yet another banker commits suicide...

An investment banker jumped to his death from the window of his million-dollar apartment in the Financial District on Thursday, sources and authorities said.

The 29-year-old man plunged from the 24th floor of the luxury Ocean apartment building at 1 West St. at about 10:40 a.m. and landed on a guardrail near the northbound Battery Park Underpass, narrowly missing a black SUV.

The man’s body was mangled by the impact, leaving one of the vehicle’s passengers horrified, witnesses said.

“I went outside, and the woman in the car was screaming, ‘I didn’t know where he came from!’ ” said Hans Peler, 48, a manager at the building’s parking garage.

“It happened right in front of our guy who waves cars in with the flag. He was so shaken up, I told him to go home.” Full story...

Parents are 'poisoning' their children with sugary food and drink...

Parents are "poisoning" their children by giving them too much sugary food and drink and must give them water, milk and fruit instead, the head of the NHS has warned.

Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England, said that parents must take "responsibility" or put their children at risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

He said that obesity is the "new smoking" and urged food manufacturers and supermarkets to do more to take sugar out of the food and drink they sell.

He told the Andrew Marr show on BBC One: "We've done very well in terms of cutting smoking and teenage pregnancy and drink driving. But the new smoking is obesity. One in five cancer deaths is now caused by obesity.

'It's going to take all of us to play our part. As parents, we've got responsibilities. When your children come home after school - it's water, or milk, not fizzy drinks or juice. Cut up apples not sugary bars. We've got responsibilities in schools." Full story...

FIFA crisis: South Africa 'admits $10m football payout'

South Africa did pay $10m (£6.5m) to a football body led by Jack Warner, a figure at the centre of Fifa corruption allegations, local media say.

Danny Jordaan, head of South Africa's FA, is quoted as confirming that the amount was deducted from a Fifa payment to the country in 2008.

A subsequent letter requested that money to be sent, instead, to the Caribbean Football Union, reports say.

South African officials deny it was a bribe to secure the 2010 World Cup.

But US prosecutors insist South Africa made an illegal payment after the government promised $10m to Mr Warner - then a Fifa vice-president - in exchange for the "Rainbow Nation" becoming the first African country to host the World Cup.

Fifa chose South Africa as host ahead of Morocco. Full story...

Thousands of teenage girls enduring debilitating illnesses after routine school cancer vaccination...

When Caron Ryalls was asked to sign consent forms so that her then 13-year-old daughter, Emily, could be vaccinated against cervical cancer, she assumed it was the best way to protect Emily’s long-term health.

Yet the past four years have turned into a nightmare for the family as Emily soon suffered side effects. Only two weeks after her first HPV injection, the teenager experienced dizziness and nausea.

“The symptoms grew increasingly worse after the second and third injections, and I went to A&E several times with severe chest and abdominal pains as well as difficulty breathing,” Emily, now 17, said. “One time I couldn’t move anything on one side of my body. I didn’t know what was happening.”

Emily is one of the thousands of teenage girls who have endured debilitating illnesses following the routine immunisation. She is yet to recover and has no idea when her health will return to normal.

“Prior to the vaccination Emily had an ‘unremarkable’ medical history with no problems,” said Mrs Ryalls, 49, from in Ossett, West Yorkshire. “She was considered very healthy and represented the school at hockey, netball, athletics and was a keen dancer. She was also a high achiever at school, in the top sets for everything and predicted at least 10 GCSE with high grades. Her future was very bright.” Full story...

Fifa president Sepp Blatter 'to be questioned' by Swiss authorities in World Cup corruption probe...

The Fifa president Sepp Blatter will be questioned by Swiss prosecutors investigating the votes for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, it has been reported.

The Swiss Attorney General’s office, which is carrying out a criminal probe into how the tournaments were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively, has said it will interview 10 serving Fifa officials who were involved in the process.

Andre Marty, a spokesman for the Swiss authorities, declined to identify the 10 officials involved, but according to the Sunday Times they include the Uefa president Michel Platini, the Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko and Mr Blatter himself.

Prosecutors have already begun questioning the 10 as “persons providing information” – a status somewhere between witness and suspect in Switzerland – as they investigate alleged “criminal mismanagement” and money laundering during the contest to decide the World Cup host nations.

According to the Sunday Times’ Insight team, which has reported on alleged corruption within Fifa for some years, Mr Blatter and Mr Platini will be among the last of the 10 to be questioned since they will remain based in Zurich after Fifa’s annual congress has disbanded. Full story...

China unveils world's first facial recognition ATM machine...

China has unveiled the world's first ATM with an inbuilt facial recognition feature on Friday. It is also China's first independently developed ATM.

Clients who use other people's bank cards at such ATMs will not be able to withdraw money even if they know the password.

Designed and produced by Tsinghua University and Hangzhou-based Tzekwan technology company, the new ATMs will be linked with banks and local police offices to crack down on financial crimes.

The ATM is installed with a camera that captures the facial images and compares them with the ID photos of users for verification.

Based on big data technology, including the identification of biological characteristics, the machine will be able to identify the cardholders if their facial features have changed, and avoid thieves who attempt to trick the machine. Full story...

Outrage after United Airlines refuses Muslim woman Diet Coke - because can 'could be used as a WEAPON'

An airline is facing a mass boycott after a Muslim woman was refused a can of Diet Coke because 'it could be used as a weapon'.

Thousands have voiced their fury at the treatment of Tahera Ahmad - who complained only to be told by a fellow passenger: 'You Muslim, you need to shut the f*** up'.

Ms Ahmad, a university chaplain in Chicago, was on a United Airlines flight at 30,000ft when she asked for an unopened can of Diet Coke 'for hygiene reasons'.

A cabin crew member said she couldn't have it because of security fears - but minutes later brought an unopened can of beer to the man next to Ms Ahmad.

Ms Ahmad wrote on Facebook: "I told her that she was clearly discriminating against me.

"She looked at his can, quickly grabbed it and opened it and said, 'it's so you don't use it as a weapon.' Full story...

The darker side of Sri Lankan Buddhism...

The small temple in the suburbs of Colombo is quiet. An image of the Buddha is surrounded with purple and white lotus flowers. Smaller Buddhas line the walls.

But upstairs, a burly monk in a bright orange robe holds forth - for this is one of the main offices of a hard-line Buddhist organisation, the Bodu Bala Sena or Buddhist Power Force (BBS).

The peaceful precepts for which Buddhism is widely known barely figure in his words. Instead, the monk, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, talks of his Buddhism in terms of race. Most Buddhists here are ethnically Sinhalese, and Sinhalese make up three-quarters of the island's population.

"This country belongs to the Sinhalese, and it is the Sinhalese who built up its civilisation, culture and settlements. The white people created all the problems," says Gnanasara Thero angrily.

He says the country was destroyed by the British colonialists, and its current problems are also the work of what he calls "outsiders". By that he means Tamils and Muslims. Full story...

'White marriage' a growing trend for young couples in Iran...

Nina and Ahmad have lived happily together in their small one-bedroom apartment for years. They share the cost of groceries; they split the rent.

But in Iran, where Islamic teachings are woven into all aspects of life, theirs is a delicate - and illegal - arrangement: They are not married.

The pair is among a growing number of young couples in Iran who are living together without exchanging vows, a trend that the government says undermines the country's religious values.

Last year, the chief of staff to the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called cohabitation "shameful."

"The Islamic ruler should strongly fight this kind of life," said Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, and officials should "show no mercy" in cracking down on the practice.

In April, the government shut down a women's magazine for dedicating a special report to cohabitation, a practice commonly referred to as "white marriage."

There are no official estimates on the number of unmarried couples cohabiting in Iran, where those who engage in sex, dating or even hand holding out of wedlock find themselves on the wrong side of the law. But officials such as Siyavash Shahrivar, deputy governor of greater Tehran, say that "white marriages" are on the increase. Full story...

Carson said she was a baby when she was first placed in foster care in Colorado. She was quickly adopted and moved with her adoptive family to Georgia.

"They were abusing me and so I got placed back into foster care when I was 12," Carson said.

'The virgins were taken to a room with 40 men. They lined us up and pointed who they wanted': Yazidi girl, 17, made pregnant by ISIS fighter reveals her nine-month ordeal as a jihadi sex slave...

A Yazidi teenager has told how she and her little sister were raped daily by depraved jihadists after they were sold into slavery at an auction of virgins - as she revealed she is now pregnant with the vile extremist's baby.

The girl, who is just 17, revealed how every day of her nine-month ordeal was 'like choosing between death and death' as she was faced with beatings and sexual assaults by the ISIS militant and his team of 'bodyguards'.

The teenager told how she was gang-raped, whipped and even scalded on the thigh with boiling hot water if she didn't keep with her ISIS rapist's depraved sexual demands.

The girl recalled how she was forced to recite passages from the Koran while her 'owner', calling himself Al-Russiyah, and his 'bodyguards' molested her.

Now, three months pregnant with Al-Russiyah's baby, the girl says she gets flashbacks and nightmares about what he did to her.

'It was like choosing between death and death... It was terrible,' she said. Full story...

America the Obese: Is there a multibillion dollar conspiracy to make sure Americans stay overweight?

According to Gallup, America is now fatter than it has ever been before. But how can this possibly be? After all, Americans spend an astounding 60 billion dollars a year on weight loss programs and products. After putting so much time, effort and energy into losing weight, shouldn’t we be some of the healthiest people on the entire planet? Sadly, the truth is that obesity has become a national epidemic, and we are known around the globe for our huge size. The term “fat Americans” has become synonymous with overweight tourists, and other cultures mock us for our apparent sloth. But could there be more to this than just the fact that we eat too much? Could it be possible that we have been fattened up by design?

Before we get to that, let’s take a look at some of the cold, hard numbers. The following are some of the statistics from the Gallup survey that I mentioned above…

-The national rate of obesity has risen to an all-time high of 27.7 percent. That is up from 27.1 percent in 2013, and it is much higher than the 25.5 percent number that we were sitting at in 2008.

-At 19.0 percent, Hawaii has the lowest rate of obesity in the entire country.

-At 35.2 percent, Mississippi has the highest rate of obesity in the entire country.

-The rest of the top 10 includes West Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa and Missouri.

And remember, those numbers just cover obesity. You can definitely be overweight without meeting the official criteria for being “obese”. According to CNN, 70 percent of all Americans are overweight at this point. To say that we have a national crisis on our hands is a huge understatement. Full story...

A quarter of Australians are OK having a chip implanted in them to pay for stuff...

A mind-boggling 25% of Australians say they are at least “slightly interested” at the prospect of having a chip implanted in their skin that could be used for payments, new research has found.

The research by credit card company Visa and the University of Technology Sydney found Australians are open to the prospect of paying for items using wearable tech including smart watches, rings, glasses and even a connected car.

“Australians are among the world’s earliest adopters of new technology,” Head of Emerging Products and Innovation for Visa in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, George Lawson said.

Visa is currently looking at how its payments tech can be integrated with wearable devices and is working with UTS to figure out how it might be adopted by the next generation of shoppers.

“New technology like tokenisation makes it possible to turn any device into a secure vehicle for commerce. We’re already seeing smartphone payments take off in Australia. Partnering with UTS gives us the opportunity to explore what our next device might be,” Lawson said. Source...

Say no to the scaremongers: Already the referendum doom merchants are lining up to insist Britain can't survive outside the EU. Twaddle, says leading MEP Daniel Hannan...

The General Election has only just finished, but the EU referendum campaign is already getting under way. The first settled which party would be in office; the second will settle whether elections in Britain matter at all.

Will the United Kingdom be an independent nation, trading with its friends on the Continent while living under its own laws? Or will it be part of a country called Europe?

David Cameron is touring EU capitals, making the case for relatively modest reforms. So far, his counterparts have played along, making a big fuss before the cameras over what they know to be quite trivial changes.

Yet they haven’t changed their minds about the EU’s destination.

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, whom the PM met yesterday, has been admirably frank. ‘We need a political union, which means we must gradually cede powers to Europe and give Europe control,’ she said recently.

‘We cannot just stop because one or other doesn’t want to join in yet.’

Note the ‘yet’. Mrs Merkel is accustomed to getting her way in Europe. Full story...

Boyfriend Rental: Company offers blokes-for-hire - with prices starting at £25 an hour...

It might be a plot for teenage movies of the past, but renting a boyfriend is actually big business.

And in Japan, it can cost you a pretty penny to purchase a pretty face to hang out with you for date night.

But featuring this week on Japan's equivalent to This Morning - Hakunetsu Live Vivid - has really brought it into the mainstream, reports Kotaku.

The boyfriends are not all considered to be on the same level, though - and it seems you really pay for quality.

Trauma dog, Caber, helps girl testify at B.C. child sex assault trial...

A Delta police trauma dog has made courtroom history in B.C. after assisting a child sexual assault victim testify at trial.

Caber, a seven-year-old Labrador retriever, became the first dog to be allowed in a B.C. court, due to a successful application by Surrey Crown Counsel Winston Sayson.

The decision to allow Caber to help the child in this case, demonstrated the ability of the criminal justice system to "evolve and be innovating in accommodating children and vulnerable victims," Sayson said in a statement.

"At this trial, Caber provided the unique kind of support that helped the child witness give a full and candid account of what happened to her," Sayson said.

During breaks in the trial, the young girl was able to cuddle and play with Caber. Full story...

Clinton Foundation accused of trading ex-president’s presence at model Petra Nemcova's charity event for $500,000 donation...

Bill Clinton agreed to appear at a fundraising gala for Petra Nemcova's school-building charity only after the Czech model offered $500,000 to the Clinton Foundation, the natural disaster organization's former executive director has claimed in a new report.

Sue Veres Royal said the former president had rejected Nemcova's invitation to appear at the Happy Hearts Fund gala for the 10th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami more than once.

But that changed when Clinton was offered 'a thinly veiled solicitation and then the offer of an honorarium' for the June 2014 gala, Veres Royal told the New York Times.

Nemcova, 35, had already been rejected once by Clinton, in 2011, when she asked if he would be the honoree for a fundraising gala celebrating Indonesia with the charity in November 2013.

After she was told by Clinton's scheduler that he already had another commitment, Veres Royal said she met with officers at the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation.

Veres Royal, who was reportedly dismissed from her position as executive director a few weeks after the gala due to conflicts over the event and internal issues, claimed she then received a call from Nemcova.

She said Nemcova told her they had to 'include an honorarium for him - that they don't look at these things unless money is offered, and it has to be $500,000'. Full story...

Child sex abuse claims shake UN as revelations continue...

The boys said they approached the French soldiers because they were hungry. Some were so young that they didn't quite understand the acts the soldiers demanded in return. One boy, 8 or 9 years old, said he did it several times to the same soldier, "until one day an older kid saw him and told him what he was doing was bad."

Another boy, 9, said he thought the soldiers had been urinating.

United Nations investigators heard such stories of sexual abuse from several boys in May and June 2014 in Central African Republic, where French soldiers were protecting a sprawling displaced persons camp in the conflict-torn capital, Bangui.

One year later, revelations about how the U.N. handled the boys' accounts have horrified people both inside and outside the world body. Statements marked "strictly confidential" have shown that its top human rights officials failed to follow up for several months on the allegations their own office had collected.

No arrests have been announced, and it's not clear where the accused soldiers, who were supporting a U.N. peacekeeping force, are now. The U.N. seems unable to say when the abuses stopped, or how long it continued to investigate. Full story...

India's Modi orders civil servants to join early morning yoga...

India’s famously ascetic prime minister has ordered civil servants to join him for early-morning yoga, as he continues his drive to whip the country’s top bureaucrats into shape.

Narendra Modi has already cracked down on Indian officials’ long lunches and complimentary golf club memberships.

It has emerged that senior civil servants had received letters asking them to join a mass yoga session being led by Mr Modi next month to mark a new international day celebrating the ancient Indian practice.

Mr Modi, an avid yoga fan, will lead an expected 35,000 people at the outdoor session at 7am on June 21 in the heart of New Delhi.

“It’ll be a 35-minute yoga demonstration programme led by the prime minister himself,” said a senior government official. Full story...

Ice cream cone named after Adolf Hitler on sale in India sparks anger in Germany...

Even for the most dedicated of ice cream lovers this sweet treat may prove a little hard to swallow.

Unbelievably a brand of ice cream cone is readily available in India which is named after Hitler.

It’s difficult to fathom what the Nazi leader may have in common with the crunchy snack, but Hitler’s name is splashed across boxes of the tasteless delicacy which is hawked across the country.

Meanwhile the cold eyes of the killer stare out at ice cream customers from the side of the packaging.

In some instances he appears in cartoon form in a Swastika-shaped top hat with a jaunty red bowtie, which is somewhat at odds with his furious expression.

Other more sombre packages depict him in full military regalia with almost photographic realism, looking very out of place next to an ice cream that's almost as big as he is. More + photos...

Air strikes kill at least 80 in deadliest bombings of Yemen war...

Saudi-led air strikes killed at least 80 people near Yemen's border with Saudi Arabia and in the capital Sanaa on Wednesday, residents said, the deadliest day of bombing in over two months of war in Yemen.

Iranian-backed Houthi rebels seized Sanaa last September and then thrust into central and south Yemen. Seeing the Houthi advance as a bridgehead for Iranian influence in the region, a Saudi-led coalition began air strikes on March 26 in a campaign to restore Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to power.

Wednesday's air raids on the Bakeel al-Meer area in Hajjah province across Saudi Arabia's border with Yemen killed at least 40 people, most of them civilians, local inhabitants said.

Tribesmen aligned with the Houthis have been fighting Saudi ground forces in the area, and border clashes have escalated the conflict between the Shi'ite Muslim rebels and the coalition of Sunni Muslim Gulf Arab states.

"Houthi gunmen were attacking Saudi border positions from this area but the coalition's planes failed to hit the fighters and bombed civilians (instead)," one resident told Reuters by telephone. Full story...

Sepp Blatter has been re-elected president of Fifa, football's world governing body, in a vote overshadowed by arrests and corruption allegations.

Mr Blatter's rival, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, withdrew after the first round of voting.

Mr Blatter fell seven short of the two-thirds needed, but Prince Ali opted not to contest further.

Seven top officials were arrested in Switzerland on Wednesday as part of a US prosecution that indicted 14 people.

Mr Blatter, 79, has faced calls to resign, including from UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who said in Berlin on Thursday that the Fifa president should quit "the sooner the better". Full story...

The prison in Uganda where murderers play for Manchester United...

A decade ago, Opio Moses was a lowly policeman out in the sticks of Eastern Uganda with a complicated love life. He had fallen for the wrong woman. One day, her uncle, who was politically connected, came to pay Moses a visit at home. He told Moses at gunpoint that their match was unsuitable and that the relationship was now over. Moses also had a gun. Both men fired at each other. Moses was wounded and the uncle was left dead, shot in the chest. Moses then turned his gun on himself. These days, his greying hair is cropped short and barely conceals the long jagged scar where his own bullet split his scalp and skull.

Moses was sentenced to 20 years for murder. When he first arrived at Luzira Upper Prison, Uganda’s only maximumsecurity facility on the southern edge of Kampala, he was filled with despair. His days were bleak and purposeless. He was paralysed by remorse and did not know how he would serve out his term. But as the shock began to wear off, he realised Luzira was not like other prisons. The inmates could play football. And the football was not just kickabouts in the yard. There were formal clubs and tournaments, even fans. In 2006, Moses began to play as an accomplished striker with a prison team.

Now, nine years later, he is the chairman of UPSA, the Upper Prison Sports Association, football’s sovereign body in Luzira. Moses, among his other duties, is also a warder, personally responsible for the care of two dozen psychiatric patients, who are among the most vulnerable inmates in the jail. He shares their ward, organises their medication and generally keeps an eye on them. This is not his toughest duty, however. “Being chairman of UPSA is the most challenging, stressful, disturbing and tiresome work that one can do in the Upper Prison,” he said. His daily duties include finding sponsors, organising tournaments, dealing with disciplinary issues, and running a player registration and transfer system. Full story...

8,000 Chinese students were expelled from US universities last year, mostly for cheating and bad grades...

As tens of thousands of Chinese students prepare to study in the U.S., they might reflect on the experience of some of those who went before them. According to an estimate by a U.S. education company, some 8,000 Chinese students were expelled from American universities last year alone – and the main reasons were poor grades and cheating.

The estimate by WholeRen Education, a U.S. company that caters to Chinese students, was based on official U.S. data and a survey of 1,657 students expelled from American universities last year. More than 80% of these students were expelled because of poor academic performance or dishonesty, the company said.

The company surveyed students about their U.S. study experience a year earlier but didn’t make any estimate for expulsions.

The survey comes amid reports that federal prosecutors in Pittsburgh have indicted 15 Chinese citizens for allegedly taking part in a college exam scheme.

Stacked up against the huge numbers of Chinese students who go to American universities every year, the failure rate isn’t so bad, WholeRen said, though it does suggest a change in the once-shining image of students from China. Full story...

Norway social workers lied in court to keep child...

Norway's controversial Child Welfare Service submitted false evidence in order to keep a child in foster care against the wishes of the mother, a court in Norway has ruled.

The young mother, whose two children were taken into care in 2012, was the following year denied the right to receive them back, despite a court resolution that the Child Welfare Service had wrongly taken them into care, because the agency claimed that the elder of the two children had said that he did not want to live with her.

The Nord-Troms district court ruled as a result that it was in the best interests of the two children that they remain with their foster parents, even though it harshly criticised the agency's handling of the case.

However, in a follow-up case this week, the court heard that the boy had kept a strong bond with his mother, despite three years of separation and had pushed continuously to be returned to her. Full story...

TSA documents show agents routinely sexually assault and grope Americans - alternative media was right all along...

We hate to say, "We told ya so," but if we in the alternative media don't point out our triumphs, nobody else will, and certainly nobody in the mainstream media: The Transportation Security Administration is a rogue agency filled with miscreants, criminals and perverts who make more of an effort to, and take more pleasure in, making the traveling public miserable than in protecting them from "terrorism."

As noted by InfoWars.com, documents obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request filed by a government watchdog organization show that TSA-caused sexual abuse is still rife around the nation, "with Americans complaining of being sexually harassed and groped while screeners laugh and sneer at them."

The documents were uncovered by Judicial Watch (JW), a Washington, D.C.-based organization that filed a lawsuit last year for more information related to alleged TSA sexual abuse.

In all, JW received 58 pages of material containing passenger complaints from 2013 alone. Alleged sexual assaults were documented at Dulles International Airport in Washington, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, Denver International Airport, Miami International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. Teens are fleeing religion like never before: Massive new study exposes religion’s decline...

(...)

According to Twenge and her cohorts, today’s adolescents view religion as less important, report less “approval” of religious organizations, and spend less time on prayer than did their similarly-aged predecessors. Some 75 percent of American 12th graders, the paper finds, believe that religion is “not important at all” in their lives.

Twenge cites a surge of individualism as the force behind atheism’s relative appeal to a young, self-centric generation. She’s literally written the book on the subject: “Generation Me.” In it, Twenge provides academic rationale to support the allegation that children born in the 1980’s and 1990’s form an “Entitlement Generation,” which she describes as being “tolerant, confident, open-minded, and ambitious but also disengaged, narcissistic, distrustful, and anxious.”

“These trends are part of a larger cultural context, a context that is often missing in polls about religion,” Twenge says. “One context is rising individualism in U.S. culture. Individualism puts the self first, which doesn’t always fit well with the commitment to the institution and other people that religion often requires. As Americans become more individualistic, it makes sense that fewer would commit to religion.”

The study also notes an “increasing acknowledgment that religion is not consistent with scientific understanding” could be driving adolescents away from religion. It is possible that “debates about teaching creationism or intelligent design in U.S. schools, such as those in Kansas in 2005, pushed some young people away from religion,” Twenge and her colleagues write in the study. Pakistani 'spy pigeon' arrested in India!!!

A pigeon has been arrested by police in India on suspicion of being a spy from Pakistan.

The bird was seized on Thursday after being spotted carrying a "stamped message" on its body.

The message was written partly in Urdu, the official language of Pakistan. It also contained a Pakistani phone number, according to reports.

The bird was discovered by a 14-year-old boy in the village of Manwal, around 4km from the Pakistani border.

He took it to the nearest police station where the bird was X-rayed. Full story...

Soccer-Singapore probes match-fixing at SEA Games...

At the same time as soccer's world leaders were meeting in Switzerland vowing to clean up the game following the latest corruption cases, another scandal emerged, this time involving match-fixing in Asia.

Singaporean authorities announced on Friday, at the exact same time that the FIFA Congress was taking place in Zurich, that they had arrested an alleged match-fixer as well as several co-conspirators following an investigation into upcoming soccer matches at the Southeast Asian Games.

Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) did not identify any of the people who were arrested but said members of at least one visiting international team were helping officials in relation to the probe.

"The authorities added that some members from the Timor-Leste SEA Games football team are also assisting them in investigations," the CPIB said in a statement.

The CPIB said the arrests were made after they began monitoring match-fixing activities relating to football matches at the 28th SEA Games, which kicked off in Singapore on Friday. Full story...

Why butter and eggs won't kill us after all: Flawed science triggers U-turn on cholesterol fears...

For decades they have been blacklisted as foods to avoid, the cause of deadly thickening of the arteries, heart disease and strokes.

But the science which warned us off eating eggs – along with other high-cholesterol foods such as butter, shellfish, bacon and liver – could have been flawed, a key report in the US has found.

Foods high in cholesterol have been branded a danger to human health since the 1970s – a warning that has long divided the medical establishment.

A growing number of experts have been arguing there is no link between high cholesterol in food and dangerous levels of the fatty substance in the blood.

Now, in a move signalling a dramatic change of stance on the issue, the US government is to accept advice to drop cholesterol from its list of 'nutrients of concern'. Full story...

US Spelling Bee: 2 Indian-Americans joint winners...

They couldn't be rattled. They couldn't be denied. Gokul Venkatachalam and Vanya Shivashankar had worked too hard and come close too many times not to win the National Spelling Bee.

So they shared the title, making history in two different ways.

The bee hadn't ended in a tie for 52 years — until last year. Now it's happened for an unprecedented two years running.

And Vanya is the first sibling of a past champion to win. Her sister, Kavya, won in 2009.

Vanya's final word was "scherenschnitte." After being informed he'd be the co-champion if he got the next word right, Gokul didn't even bother to ask the definition before spelling "nunatak" — which means a hill or mountain that has been completely encircled by a glacier.

Gokul finished third last year. Source + photos...

Sri Lanka accused of waging 'silent war' as Tamil land is appropriated by army...

Six years after the end of Sri Lanka’s long and bloody civil war, a “silent” conflict is being waged across the island, with tens of thousands of government troops continuing to occupy the north and east and the army expanding its property developments on land belonging to displaced Tamils, a new report claims.

Although the 26-year-long conflict between the majority Sinhalese government and Tamil separatists finally ended in 2009 with the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE), the study by the US-based thinktank the Oakland Institute finds little meaningful evidence of reconciliation.

It says hopes of peaceful coexistence are being thwarted by the enduring displacement of Tamils, the appropriation of their land by the military, the new government’s refusal to take the country off its war footing, and the delay in investigating allegations of war crimes committed by both state forces and the Tamil Tigers.

“Six years later, a silent war continues under a different guise,” says the report, The Long Shadow of War: the Struggle for Justice in Postwar Sri Lanka. “One major issue is the continued displacement of people from their lands and homes as a result of persistent military occupation of the northern and eastern provinces.”

The study says thousands of Tamils are still internally displaced and without homes and livelihoods, adding that those who have been “resettled” through government schemes have often been moved involuntarily to areas that lack proper infrastructure. Full story...
