The world is overall becoming a less peaceful place and Syria is the least peaceful of all, according to the 2014 Global Peace Index (GPI) released by the non-profit Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) Wednesday.
GPI found that Europe remains the most peaceful region, while South Asia is the least. The report highlighted in particular the negative impact of heightened conflict in Ukraine, Syria, Egypt, and South Sudan, and increased terrorist activity in many countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, the Philippines, and Libya.
Conflict is also costly: IEP placed the economic impact of dealing with and containing violence in 2013 at $9.8 trillion (a $170 billion increase from 2012), equivalent to about 11.3% of global GDP or $1,350 per person.
GPI is a yearly ranking of nations based on their level of peace. The study ranks 162 states (covering about 99.6 percent of the world’s population) using 22 indicators centered around three broad themes: the level of social safety and security, degree of domestic and international conflict, and extent of militarization.
The top 10 safest countries according to GPI are largely European and have high GDPs: Iceland, Denmark, Austria, New Zealand, Switzerland, Finland, Canada, Japan, Belgium, and Norway. Looking forward, IEP’s model identified Zambia, Haiti, Argentina, Chad, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nepal, Burundi, Georgia, Liberia, and Qatar as the countries most likely to experience further deteriorations.
