Why Tony Blair’s ego trips should make us cringe...

Bizarre, isn’t it, that a man whose reputation as a prime minister has been so devalued should be coining it out of office?

It’s hard to pin down precisely what Blair earns or what he’s worth because the accountants have woven such a complex web of companies around him. But we do know – because he has modestly told us – that he’s the world’s highest-paid speaker at about £180,000 a go.

If he had anything worth hearing then it’s conceivable he might be worth a fraction of that sum – maybe without at least one of the noughts.

But a man who took his country to war on the basis of a big lie and who prepares for his poverty crusades and his peace missions by swanning around on big yachts owned by his billionaire chums doesn’t strike most of us as being someone with a message that’s relevant.

So I can understand why the people of Thailand were so enraged that they took to the streets to protest about Blair’s presence in their country.

Someone put out a false rumour that he was being paid £400,000 of public money to speak at a peace conference and before you could say Perma-Tanned Moneygrabber the streets were lined with protesters. Full story...
