Baroness Ashton under fire for €1billion in 'wasted' aid to Egypt...

One billion euros of European Union aid to Egypt, supervised by Baroness Ashton, has been largely wasted, with the money doing little to tackle corruption or stop human rights abuses, according to official auditors.

Britain's contribution to the "well-intentioned but ineffective" aid has totalled over £125 million (€145m) over the last seven years, spending overseen by Lady Ashton, the EU foreign minister and her European External Action Service (EEAS).

A report from the European Court of Auditors is "highly critical" of the funding both before and after the Arab Spring uprising and criticises an EU failure to address a "critical need for urgent action to counter the tide of growing intolerance" under a new Islamist government.

The auditors criticise the European Commission and Lady Ashton's diplomatic corps for losing track of "approximately 60 per cent of EU assistance" that was directly handed over to the Egyptian authorities without strict conditions. Full story...
