A 30-year-old American woman was gang raped by three men near the northern Indian town of Manali early Tuesday morning, a police official said.
The woman told police she had accepted a truck driver's offer to take her from the village of Vashisht, where she had been visiting a friend, to her guesthouse in Manali, which is around three miles away. After boarding the vehicle at around 1 a.m., she was raped by three men, including the driver, said Vinod Kumar Dhawan, police superintendent in Kullu, the district where Manali is located.
More than two hours later, the woman was dumped on a highway. She walked to a bus stop where she was discovered. "Highway patrolmen first noticed the woman along the stretch of the road. She was screaming for help," another police official involved in the case said. She was taken to the police station in Manali, where authorities registered a case of rape and abduction at 4:30 am, he added.
No arrests have been made yet, Mr. Dhawan said. The woman, who has undergone a medical examination, didn't suffer serious physical injuries, he added. The woman couldn't be reached for comment.
