Valerie Trierweiler to be treated as 'honorary wife' on Hollande's Indian state visit...

Valerie Trierweiler, the partner of Francois Hollande, will be treated as his "honorary wife" on a state visit to India to avoid protocol problems.

Hardline religious leaders had demanded that the French president travel alone to India on the trip later this month because of his unmarried status.

The Indian government however has now agreed to relax their diplomatic rules and treat the 47-year-old divorcee as his legal wife according to the Asian Age newspaper.

The decision to welcome Ms Trierweiler as the president's wife on February 14 is a marked difference from five years ago, when Carla Bruni did not even travel to India with her then boyfriend Nicolas Sarkozy.
