India drops to 140th rank in press freedom, lowest since 2002...

India has dropped nine places to 140th rank in the list of 179 countries in the latest World Press Freedom Index, which its authors said is the lowest for the "world's biggest democracy" since 2002.

"In Asia, India (140th, -9) is at its lowest since 2002 because of increasing impunity for violence against journalists and because internet censorship continues to grow," Reporters Without Borders said in its World Press Freedom Index for the year 2013.

"China (173rd, +1) shows no sign of improving. Its prisons still hold many journalists and netizens, while increasingly unpopular internet censorship continues to be a major obstacle to access to information."

As last year, the list is topped by three European countries - Finland, Netherlands and Norway. Full story...

Report: TSA training for a possible checkpoint shooting...

(...)

The Times added that it is “unclear whether the alleged training is simply a prudent attempt by the agency to protect its own employees from every imaginable contingency," referencing the 2009 Christmas Day “Underwear Bomber” as a “reason to pay close attention to the details of Homeland Security’s operations.” According to Wikipedia, the so-called Underwear Bomber, Umar Abdulmutallab, "attempted to detonate plastic explosives hidden in his underwear" while onboard a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. The Times notes that a witness who saw Abdulmutallab board the flight has suggested that U.S. government agents permitted him to do so while knowing he was a threat to safety:

Michigan attorney Kurt Haskell, a 2012 Democratic Congressional candidate who lost to incumbent Tim Walberg (R-MI), stated by way of a Victim Impact Statement during Abdulmutallab’s sentencing hearing in federal court that while he and his wife Lori waited to board the flight in Amsterdam, he observed a well-dressed man help the bomber board the flight without a passport.

Haskell is convinced that “a federal agent gave Abdulmutallab a defective bomb to carry onto the plane to create an incident that would cause the government to install full body scanners at airports nationwide,” according to USA Today.

Haskell stated, “Regardless of how media and government try to shape this case, I am convinced that Umar was given an intentionally defective bomb by a U.S. agent.”

Upon hearing about the TSA training for a checkpoint shooting, he told the Washington Times that it “doesn’t surprise me at all,” adding that he feared the government may be planning another attack. Full story...

Zimbabwe has just £138 left in the bank, finance minister says!!!

Zimbabwe's finance minister has announced that the country only has £138.34 left in the state bank accounts.

Tendai Biti made the announcement at press conference on Tuesday, declaring: "Last week when we paid civil servants there was $217 in government coffers".

Mr Biti went on to tell the shocked news reporters that they were individually likely to have healthier bank balances than the state's.

"The government finances are in paralysis state at the present moment," Mr Biti admitted. Full story...

Son 'beheaded mother for looking like a witch'

A naked man seen "walking like a zombie" had beheaded his mother because he thought she looked like a witch, the Old Bailey has heard.

Daniel Coriat, 44, of Forest Hill, south London, was hiding in a wheelie bin when he was arrested in March 2012.

His 76-year-old mother's mutilated body was found at the flat they shared.

Coriat was ordered to be detained at a secure hospital without a time limit after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Sending him to Broadmoor, Judge Richard Hone said: "The public has to be protected from a reoccurrence of this bizarre, grisly and grotesque violence."A naked man seen "walking like a zombie" had beheaded his mother because he thought she looked like a witch, the Old Bailey has heard. Google iPhone tracking: more than 70 users contact lawyers...

More than 70 Apple iPhone users in the UK have joined a landmark privacy action against Google over the way it tracked their online habits, and another 30 have expressed interest, lawyers said on Tuesday.

The internet giant is facing a group privacy claim over the way it sidestepped Apple's security settings on the iPhone, iPad and desktop versions of its Safari web browser to monitor their behaviour. The US Federal Trade Commission fined it a then-record $22.5m (£14m) last year over the privacy breach's effect on American users.

More than 100 internet users have contracted the law firm Olswang, which is co-ordinating the claim, since Sunday to register their interest in joining the privacy action. A Facebook group set up by those suing Google, called Safari Users Against Google's Secret Tracking, has been "liked" by more than 430 people.

Dan Tench, the lawyer coordinating the claims, told the Guardian: "We've had more than 70 people come forward to join this action. We are seeking further details in respect of these individuals' cases and, where appropriate, will be making further claims for them against Google." Full story...

Singapore likes a crowd...

Singapore’s government has projected that the tiny city-state’s population of 5.3 million – about the size of metropolitan Miami – will reach 6.9 million by 2030, almost half of which will be made up of foreigners as the citizen population continues to shrink with declining birth rates and an aging population.

Population growth, the government says, will help achieve gross domestic product growth of about 3-to-4% yearly up till 2020, and growth of about 2-to- 3% for the decade after that. In the more immediate term, Singapore’s population is expected to climb to about 6 million in the next seven years, a number that, according to government projections, will ensure the city-state’s workforce expands enough to meet ideal economic growth rates.

These projected numbers and the government’s rational behind its immigration and population policies were sketched out on Tuesday in a white paper by the National Population and Talent Division, a governmental body under Singapore’s deputy prime minister, Teo Chee Hean.

The issue of population – particularly the city-state’s reliance on a large foreign workforce to complement its dwindling number of citizens – has for years been a delicate political issue in Singapore. Disaffection towards the longtime ruling People’s Action Party – the only party in power since the young city-state’s independence in the 1960s – was further proved by its loss in a by-election over the weekend, which boosted opposition representation in parliament to a small but unprecedented seven out of 87 seats. Rising housing and transportation costs, seen as a direct result of more people in the already-crowded state, are among the core reasons for this unhappiness, and the government has been under increasing pressure to cut its dependence on foreign labor. Families face battle with GSK over dangerous diabetes drug...

Thousands of families in the UK could be deprived of compensation for the death or harm of a relative caused by the diabetes drug Avandia, even though the British maker has agreed to pay billions of dollars to settle similar claims in the US.

The licence for Avandia was revoked in Europe, in September 2010, because of evidence that it could cause heart failure and heart attacks. The drug can still be prescribed in the US, but not to patients at risk of heart problems.

A scientist with the Food and Drug Administration estimated that Avandia could have been responsible for 100,000 heart attacks in the US.

The manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, has admitted concealing data about the damaging side-effects of the drug, and there is evidence of the drug's harmful effects. But, despite this, GSK is not prepared to settle claims in the UK without a court fight. Full story...

France Football says Qatar bought 2022 World Cup rights...

Qatar has bought the right to stage the 2022 World Cup through bribing the inner circle of FIFA’s executive committee members, an investigation has shown.

The results of the probe revealed Tuesday by France Football allegedly prove that in December 2010 Qatar bought the votes of FIFA executives and won the bid against such strong opponents as the US, South Korea, Japan and Australia.

France Football said the votes of Issa Hayatou and Jacques Anouma from the Confédération africaine de football (CAF) were purchased for $1.5 million each.

In 2010, Qatar spent $1.25 million on CAF’s congress to win the four votes of FIFA’s African executives. In addition, the then President Nicolas Sarkozy asked UEFA president Michel Platini to support Qatar’s bid for “geopolitical reasons.”

France Football alleged that President Sarkozy and Michel Platini then met with Qatar's Crown Prince Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani to discuss Qatar’s future investments into French football.

In 2011, Qatar Investment Authority purchased 70% of Paris Saint-Germain.

France Football said it is going to submit the evidence to FIFA. Source...

Why? Where? What?

Hey, hey, Barack! What do you say? How many kids have you killed today?

I personally found the president’s inaugural speech not just insipid, but disgusting. It reached its gut-churning nadir near the end where he said:

“We, the people, still believe that enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war...We will show the courage to try and resolve our differences with other nations peacefully – not because we are naïve about the dangers we face, but because engagement can more durably lift suspicion and fear...And we must be a source of hope to the poor, the sick, the marginalized, the victims of prejudice – not out of mere charity, but because peace in our time requires the constant advance of those principles that our common creed describes: tolerance and opportunity; human dignity and justice.”

As he spoke these uplifting phrases, US factories were cranking out, under the terms of billion-dollar Pentagon contracts, fleets of drone aircraft that daily are raining explosives down on innocent men, women and children in countries that the US is not even at war with. Most of those drone attacks are personally approved by our Nobel Peace Laureate president, who has claimed the right -- unchallenged by either Congress or the Judiciary -- to order the liquidation of anyone he deems to be a terrorist (including American citizens), as well as those, even children, who happen to be in the vicinity of such a person. Of the 362 drone strikes in Pakistan to date, 310 were launched during the period Obama has been commander in chief. Full story...

Tibetans mourn as self-immolations near 100...

Six Tibetan pilgrims prostrated themselves face down on the road, then rose, took three paces forward and repeated the dusty act of devotion around the 250-year-old monastery here.

It is a ritual that Tibetans have practiced for centuries. Despite wars and a communist takeover, the Tibetan people’s age-old attachment to their Buddhist faith remains.

But a deadly development on this eastern edge of the high Tibetan plateau has made this small community tense and fearful.

On Tuesday (Jan. 29), Kunchok Kyab, 26, set fire to himself near the monastery in an apparent protest against Chinese rule. The Tibetan farmer, married with an infant son, died from his injuries, reported Tibetan exile media.

His self-immolation, the third in Bora, took the total to 99 since the first such protest in February 2009, according to the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, India. More than 80 such desperate acts have happened in the past 12 months alone. Full story...

In South Africa they are stealing ... hair!!!

Jasper Munsinwa was partying at a Johannesburg club when he noticed his friend was missing. Minutes later, he found him passed out - with all of his dreadlocks shorn off.

Munsinwa's friend, Mutsa Madonko, who was visiting from Zimbabwe early this month and has since left, is one of a growing number of people who have had their dreadlocks stolen in the past few months.

The thefts, said hair stylists, were probably connected to the rising demand for natural dreadlocks as extensions.

Shoulder-length dreadlocks are sold for between R200 and R700, while longer ones cost as much as R2500. Full story...

Man sells canned fresh air in China!!!

This is a story that shows how deliriously capitalist China has become (for good and bad). Rapid industrialisation has covered northern China in a dense pea soup of toxic chemicals. In the past, the old fashioned communist solution might have been either to ignore the problem or, if people insist on dying, organise the entire country in a “popular war on bourgeois toxins.” But in a post-Mao order, how does China’s elite deal with pollution? Yuppie consumerism.

Chen Guangbiao, an entrepreneur worth $740 million (how, why, and would he like to meet my daughters?) has started selling cans of fresh air for people to crack open and suck in. They go for 5 yuan each and, according to one report, they come with atmospheric flavours including “pristine Tibet, post-industrial Taiwan and revolutionary Yan'an.” Presumably the “pristine Tibet” can smells ever so slightly of gunpowder.

The story tells us two things. First, the price of China’s rapid development is that it now has to cope with the same problems that beset the already developed world. It’s good, because it means people are getting richer. But it’s bad because it means the country is experiencing what London went through in the 1950s as the industrial landscape coughs up its blackened lungs. According to the BBC, Beijing has reported air quality readings that show pollutants present at 20 times the recommended limits; visibility has been reduced and residents have been advised to stay indoors. Prosperity creates its own kinds of poverty. Full story...

Final Solution - Gujarat genocide of minorities in India...

China could prove ultimate winner in Afghanistan...

China, long a bystander to the conflict in Afghanistan, is stepping up its involvement as U.S.-led forces prepare to withdraw, attracted by the country's vast mineral resources but concerned that any post-2014 chaos could embolden Islamist insurgents in its own territory.

Cheered on by the U.S. and other Western governments, which see Asia's giant as a potentially stabilizing force, China could prove the ultimate winner in Afghanistan — having shed no blood and not much aid.

Security — or the lack of it — remains the key challenge: Chinese enterprises have already bagged three multibillion dollar investment projects, but they won't be able to go forward unless conditions get safer. While the Chinese do not appear ready to rush into any vacuum left by the withdrawal of foreign troops, a definite shift toward a more hands-on approach to Afghanistan is under way.

Beijing signed a strategic partnership last summer with the war-torn country. This was followed in September with a trip to Kabul by its top security official, the first by a leading Chinese government figure in 46 years, and the announcement that China would train 300 Afghan police officers. China is also showing signs of willingness to help negotiate a peace agreement as NATO prepares to pull out in two years. Full story...

Saudi Arabia shops told to build sex-segregation walls...

Saudi Arabia authorities have ordered shops employing both men and women to build separation walls to enforce the strict segregation laws of the ultra-conservative kingdom, local press reported Monday.

The order that was issued by labour minister Adel Faqih also had the stamp of Abdullatif al-Sheikh, the head of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, commonly known as Mutawa and religious police, several dailies reported.

It stipulated that a separation barrier, not shorter than 1.6 metres (over five feet), should be erected to divide working men and women.

Authorities in June 2011 told lingerie shops to replace their salesmen, mostly Asian, with Saudi saleswomen. This directive was later extended to cosmetic outlets. Full story...

'Starving North Koreans eating own kids, corpses'

Reports from inside the secretive famine-hit pariah state, North Korea, claim a man has been executed after murdering his two children for food.

Shocking reports claim North Koreans are turning to cannibalism including details of one man who dug up his grandchild's corpse to eat and another who boiled his child and ate the flesh.

Details of the incidents were reported by the Asia Press, and published in the Sunday Times.

They claim a 'hidden famine' in the farming provinces of North and South Hwanghae has killed 10,000 people, and there are fears that cannibalism is spreading throughout the country.

The reports come as sanctions are tightened against the backdrop of angry rhetoric over missile testing. Full story...

WhatsApp violates privacy laws: report...

WhatsApp, one of the most popular apps in the world, contravenes international privacy laws because it forces users to provide access to their entire address book, Canadian and Dutch data protection authorities said.

WhatsApp, which ranks as one of the world's top five best-selling apps, is an instant-messaging application for smartphones including Apple's ,iPhone and Research in Motion's Blackberry.

The report comes at a time of increased criticism of internet companies, such as Facebook, over the storing and sharing of personal information.

Produced by California-based WhatsApp Inc., it provides a free internet alternative to SMS, or text messaging, sending more than a billion messages every day. Full story...

Call to highlight the dangers of 'sexting' for teens...

The Corner, which offers health information and peer-led support for young people, carried out the research at the end of last year as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the problems sexting can cause, and to allow workers to get an idea of its scale.

More than 200 young people took part, of whom 85 said they, or a friend, had been affected by sexting, while 121 said they had not.

These included 34 of the 100 under-16s spoken to, and 27 out of 67 (40%) of under-20s.

The survey asked what sexting meant to young people, with 11 saying it meant sending naked pictures by text, four said it meant sending semi-naked pictures via instant messaging or Blackberry messages, and 14 said it meant having a sexual conversation via text, instant messaging or using Facebook. The vast majority – 177 young people (86%) – answered "all of the above".

Asked whether they could get in trouble legally for sexting, 72% of young people thought they could. Full story...

A woman is being sued by her husband for allegedly trying to kill him by putting poison in her genitals and then asking him to perform oral sex.

Reports in the South American country suggest he was ready and willing, and only escaped death because he noticed a strange smell.

The alleged attempt on his life was exposed when tests on his wife discovered traces of a poisonous substance down below. Source...

Three Connecticut police officers caught on camera 'kicking and stomping on man they'd subdued with a stun gun'

Three Connecticut police officers have been put on administrative leave after they were caught on video brutally beating a suspect in a local park.

Elson Morales, Joseph Lawlor and Clive Higgins, all 10-year veterans of the Bridgeport Police Department, are shown on the tape kicking and stomping on a man they had already subdued with a stun gun.

They will remain on paid administrative leave while the May 2011 encounter is investigated.

The sobering footage was uploaded on YouTube on January 18 by an anonymous user. It is unclear who filmed it.

In the video, which goes in and out of focus, the pop and sizzle of the electric stun gun can be heard before a man shouts 'nice shot' from off camera as the suspect falls to the ground. Full story...

How television news creates the illusion of knowledge...

In analyzing network coverage of the Sandy Hook murders, I had no intention of doing a series of articles on television news, but the opportunity to deconstruct the overall grand illusion was compelling.

A number of articles later, I want to discuss yet another sleight-of-hand trick. The myth of “coverage.”

It’s familiar to every viewer. Scott Pelley, in seamless fashion, might say, “Our top story tonight, the widening conflict in Syria. For the latest on the Assad government crackdown, our coverage begins with Clarissa Ward in Damascus…” .

Clarissa Ward has entered the country secretly, posing as a tourist. She carries a small camera. In interviews with rebels, she discovers that a) there is a conflict, b) people are being arrested c) there is a funeral for a person who was killed by government soldiers, d) defiance among the citizenry is growing.

In other words, she tells us almost nothing. Full story...

Switzerland awash with money laundering cases...

In the first month of 2013 the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office has frozen accounts in connection with the Russian Magnitsky corruption case, a criminal complaint was filed against Malaysia’s Taib clan, and revelations emerged of €22 million (SFr27 million) in an account belonging to Luis Barcenas, a Spanish politician implicated in a corruption scandal.

Critics say the regulators and law enforcement authorities need to get tougher on the banks, but with an estimated 30 per cent of global offshore wealth held in Switzerland, the task of rooting out the bad apples is significant.

Gretta Fenner of the Basel Institute for Governance agrees that part of the problem is Switzerland’s attractiveness as a home for money. The qualities favoured by above-board customers – stability, security, secrecy – are also favoured by corrupt officials and criminals.

All the more reason to enforce the legislation as strictly as possible, she says. “Even if it is not perfect, we’ve got to start enforcing what we have and I don’t think we’re doing that in Switzerland enough,” Fenner told swissinfo.ch.

She stresses that Switzerland is not a unique case and that the same criticism applies to other financial centres, such as the City of London. Full story...

Man burns his wife after she sent nude photo to another man!!!

A man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after burning his wife with a blowtorch in order to teach her lesson not to send naked photos of herself to other men, according to the New York Police Department.

With glazed eyes and a calm demeanor, Carlos Diaz spoke about why he burned his wife in order "to give her a little pain", so the 38-year-old mother, Cathy Zapata, will learn a lesson.

"Now she will worry about our child and take her life seriously instead of focusing on other men," Diaz said during an interview Friday from Rikers Island.
Diaz was arrested earlier this month, after setting the woman on fire in a lot, then soaked his old auto shop with gasoline.

Diaz told news reporters that he erupted when he discovered a nude photo of Zapata, who had recently gotten some cosmetic surgery done, was sent to another man with her cell phone.
"I could not think clearly. I wanted to die," Diaz, 35, glancing nervously at the floor, said. "I had to do something," he added. Source...

Was Aaron Swartz killed by an MIT satanic child porn ring? Yoichi Shimatsu makes an excellent case that Swartz was indeed suicided by a MIT satanic child porn ring with Zionist ties.

The death of Swartz, the brilliant creator of Reddit and the RSS feeds, died under very mysterious circumstances after looking into MIT files which linked parts of the MIT to international child sex trafficking. Swartz’s death is one of a long line of mysterious suicides which serve to conceal the depth of the child sex trafficking industry controlled by the Zionists.

Apple hides almost $1bn a week from US tax man...

Technology giant Apple shuttled $11bn (£7bn) into offshore tax havens in the fourth quarter of 2012, an analysis of its corporate filings has revealed.

The iPad maker has slashed its tax bill by paying less than 2pc on its overseas profits, as it moves money through offshoots in low-tax countries such as the British Virgin Islands.

Apple's completely legal tax avoidance strategies bring the total the company has sheltered from the US tax authorities to $94bn, according to a Sunday Times analysis.

Corporation tax on Apple's overseas operations amount to just 1.9pc of profits, compared with a tax rate of up to 24pc in the UK and 35pc in the US. Full story...

The children killed by America's drones. Crimes against humanity committed by Barack Obama...

This is a list of names of innocent children killed by America’s drones

But behind each name there is the face of a child with a family history in a village in a far away country, with a mom and a dad, with brothers and sisters and friends.

Among the list, are infants of 1, 2, 3 and 4 years old.

In some cases brothers and sisters of an entire family are killed.

Four sisters of the Ali Mohammed Nasser family in Yemen were killed. Afrah was 9 years old when she and her three younger sisters Zayda (7 years old) , Hoda (5 years old) and Sheika (4 years old) were struck by an American drone.

Ibrahim, a 13 year old boy of the Abdullah Mokbel Salem Louqye family in Yemen was struck by a US drone, together with his younger brother Asmaa (9 years old) and two younger sisters, Salma (4 years old) and Fatima (3 years old)

These children are innocent. They are not different from our own children. Full story...

Indian farmers trapped and desperate...

The agrarian crisis of which farmer suicides are a tragic consequence is a mega calamity, rooted in one fundamental cause, which P. Sainath, the rural editor for The Hindu newspaper, describes as “the drive towards corporate farming”, predicated by the “predatory commercialization of the countryside” that is forcing “the biggest displacement in Indian history”. Shocking and destructive as it is, it should be seen as part of a greater whole of interconnected issues facing India. Sainath makes this clear: “Don’t detach this crisis from the overall political, economic and social direction of the country,” he says.

The number of farmer suicides – the largest in human history – is estimated to have reached more than 300,000 and rising as we speak. Add to this the 400 a day who attempt suicide and fail, the 2,200 that daily quit farming and the one and a half million family members affected by suicides, plus the millions facing the very issues that are driving the tragedy, and the scale of the inferno begins to be clear.

Shocking, as they are, these figures are an indication only; women are one of eight groups who are generally excluded from official data because most do not have title to land. A woman is not classed as a farmer; she is a farmer’s wife, and her suicide is not included in the figures. Also excluded from the statistics, according to the Centre for Human Rights and Global Justice at New York University (HRGJ), are family members of farmers who have committed suicide – who themselves take over farming land and subsequently commit suicide because of debt”. The Dalit and indigenous Adivasi people are also invisible to a government who ignores them in death as in life. Full story...

Drones, US propaganda and imperial hubris...

Pakistanis should be more supportive of having their national sovereignty violated by Americans, according to US-based political scientists who favor drone strikes in Pakistan. I am trying hard not make this sound like an Onion article, even though it does.

In a January 23 article for The Atlantic, professors Christine Fair, Karl Kaltenthaler and William J. Miller argue that Pakistani opposition to drone strikes is not as widespread as previously claimed, and that the US government should take steps to convert Pakistanis to the official US view on drone strikes:

[The US] must draw to its side the large swath of the population that doesn’t even know about the program. This may mean using radio, non-cable TV (including local Pakistani networks) or even hyper-local media such as SMS -- and it means doing so in Urdu and perhaps other vernacular languages.

This is some of the most propagandistic writing in support of President Barack Obama’s targeted kill lists to date. It takes a serious level of arrogance to suggest inserting a US policy stance into the output of another country’s media. It apparently also requires misrepresenting data related to the numbers of Pakistanis who support drone strikes and using faulty methodology. Full story...

Ex-CIA officer: Torture great way to get false confessions...

Torture brings forth unreliable information and false confessions, apart from the fact that it is a serious violation of all manner of international agreements, former CIA officer Ray McGovern told RT.

“You can’t get reliable information from torture. But torture works beautifully if you want unreliable information” says McGovern.

His comments come amid the trial of John Kiriakou, a CIA veteran sentenced to two years in prison, after leaking sensitive information about Washington’s torture program.

Kiriakou, the man who oversaw the capture of Al-Qaeda's third-in-command, blew the lid on America’s torture program, revealing the name of an alleged torturer at Guantanamo Bay.

Kiriakou came out against Washington’s torture program supporting the notion that torture is illegal, says McGovern adding that the accusations against Kiriakou are political andhe is being punished out due to rank-hypocrisy. Full story...

Dad points AK-47 at daughter for getting two B’s in school!!!

A St. Paul man has been charged with terroristic threats for pointing an AK-47 rifle at his daughter during an argument over the fact that she got two B's instead of straight A's in school.

According to the charges, 52-year-old Kirill Bartashevitch recently purchased the AK-47 due to fears that such weapons would be banned under President Obama's push for gun control legislation.

St. Paul police learned of the Jan. 13 incident after Bartashevitch's daughter sent a text message to a Central High School classmate, saying her father pointed an AK-47 at her. The message was seen by the classmate's mother, who reported it to a school social worker.

In an interview with the social worker, the victim said they were arguing about her grades when she swore at her father and said she "hated" him. At that point, Bartashevitch grabbed his newly-purchased gun and pointed it at his daughter. Full story...

Man with 4th amendment on chest wins trial over airport arrest by TSA...

A Virginia man who wrote an abbreviated version of the Fourth Amendment on his body and stripped to his shorts at an airport security screening area won a trial Friday in his lawsuit seeking $250,000 in damages for being detained on a disorderly conduct charge.

Aaron Tobey claimed in a civil rights lawsuit (.pdf) that in 2010 he was handcuffed and held for about 90 minutes by the Transportation Security Administration at the Richmond International Airport after he began removing his clothing to display on his chest a magic-marker protest of airport security measures.

“Amendment 4: The right of the people to be secure against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated,” his chest and gut read.

In sending the case to trial, unless there’s a settlement, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 and reversed a lower court judge and invoked Benjamin Franklin in the process. Full story...

The dark web stole my life...

Last week, I picked up an evening paper and read that I was stuck in the Philippines without money after being attacked by ‘unknown gunmen’. As I was standing under a large London Underground sign on my way out to dinner with friends, I was reasonably confident the report wasn’t true.

But I did have an uneasy sense of losing grip on reality. That morning had begun with an unsettling phone call from a cousin in Jersey. A retired Army officer, he informed me that I had been hacked. He had received an email from my address, which told the same sorry tale of armed robbery in Manila.

The email went on to ask for money: ‘Presently having problems sorting out our bills here and also getting a cab down to the airport . . . ’ wrote my alter ego. ‘Wondering if you can help us get a quick loan to sort out our bills and get back home. All we need is 2,350.00 USD.’

I was heading to an appointment and decided it could wait. But I underestimated how fast these hackers from the ‘dark web’ worked. Within minutes, my BlackBerry pinged into furious life with a flurry of texts and calls as the email spread through my address book. Full story...

WP's Lee Li Lian wins Punggol East by-election in Singapore...

Lee Li Lian of the opposition Workers’ Party won the Punggol East by-election in a close fight Saturday, delivering a big blow to the ruling People’s Action Party.

The 34-year-old sales trainer garnered 16,038 votes against PAP candidate Dr Koh Poh Koon’s 12,856.

Reform Party’s Kenneth Jeyaretnam got 353 votes while Singapore Democratic Alliance’s Desmond Lim got 168 votes.

The by-election, which came after then Parliament Speaker and MP for Punggol East Michael Palmer resigned last month in disgrace after admitting to an extra-marital affair, was closely watched by Singaporeans .

The win brings to seven the number of MP seats held by the WP, aside from the two places garnered for NCMPs.

She has been with the party for six years and has held various posts including president of the youth wing and is its current deputy webmaster.

Lee has campaigned on the promise she would fight to make the voices of worried young parents raising children heard, as well as those elderly Singaporeans facing rising costs and medical care.

Topless Femen protestors attack Vatican...

Oh No! Not another Osama!

The bloody attack on an Algerian gas installation and France’s invasion of Mali are the result of troubles that have been brewing for years – we simply have not been paying attention.

Jihadist guerilla leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar, headlined as a new Great Islamic Satan by French media, has been making trouble in the Sahara for a long time, kidnapping westerners, robbing caravans, smuggling cigarettes.

Belmokhtar was known as a "man of honor," one of the western-financed jihadists who went to battle the Soviets and their communist allies in Afghanistan in the 1980’s and 90’s. He retuned to his native Algeria, minus an eye lost in combat, and, with his fellow "Afghani," sought to overthrow Algeria’s western-backed military regime, a major oil and gas supplier to France.

In 1991, Algeria’s junta, bankrupt of ideas, allowed a free election. Big mistake. Algeria’s Islamists won the first round parliamentary vote. The military panicked. Backed by France and the US, Algeria’s military crushed the Islamic movement and arrested its leaders. Full story...

Peak Oil bites the dust...

(...)

And Peak Oil has been one of the most stubborn and longest-lasting. We've argued that the market itself (the Invisible Hand) would find a way to generate energy – via more oil or with other energy sources – if oil was actually running out. But we didn't really think oil WAS running out. We believed it was just another manipulation.

We've traced that manipulation many times. Just search for Peak Oil and Daily Bell. It's laid out in detail, and to give credit where credit is due, we are not the only alternative mainstream journos to have made the case. There are plenty of others who've delved into the Peak Oil scam and exposed it.

Memes like Peak Oil and global warming are, in fact, propaganda ... launched by a power elite that wants to control the world and needs to frighten people about the availability of basic resources in order to do it.

The memes are carefully constructed and come out of such places as Tavistock. They are then propounded in scientific journals, elaborated on by elite-controlled think tanks, reporter on in mainstream media and finally "acted upon" by the United Nations and various legislatures. Full story...

Internet pioneer warns of government meddling...

The inventor of the World Wide Web warns that government control is limiting the possibilities of the internet, as dozens of countries and businesses sign a cyber-security deal at the Davos forum.

The comments by Tim Berners-Lee at the World Economic Forum on Friday plugged into a wider debate among the delegates on the future of the internet, particularly how to balance openness with privacy and security.

While Yahoo! chief Marissa Mayer told the forum there was a "trade off" between privacy and the benefits of increasingly personalised services offered by internet giants, the network's founding father took up the ethical issues at stake.

"The dream is of a more open web," Berners-Lee told the gathering in the Graubünden ski resort, citing social media as a way of breaking down barriers.

But he said the recent suicide of Aaron Swartz, a 26-year-old US Internet activist who faced charges of illegally copying and distributing millions of academic articles, highlighted government efforts to police the internet. Full story...

Bill Gates says global vaccination is "God's work..."

(...)

To this question, Gates responded with seemingly atypical religious zeal, noted by Tweedie in the published article. “It’s not going to stop us succeeding,” says Gates. “It does force us to sit down with the Pakistan government to renew their commitments, see what they’re going to do in security and make changes to protect the women who are doing God’s work and getting out to these children and delivering the vaccine.”

Indeed, the religious tone of Gates during the course of the interview may seem confusing to Tweedie, but the nature of Gates’ work could very well be described as a religion. Thus, the fact that it finds itself in direct confrontation with another religion – the Islamist groups that Tweedie speaks of – is of no real consequence to Gates as his solution is to dutifully press forward.

Yet, before readers write off the vaccine resisters solely as Muslim fundamentalists, many of the individuals opposing vaccination have a very good reason to be skeptical. Especially those that believe Gates’ vaccine push is geared more toward sterilization and population reduction than about life extension and better health conditions. Full story...
