Former mayor of Beijing pelted with water bottles in China...

Chinese usually greet the arrival of their top leaders with hushed reverence. But when one senior Communist party official had the top of a mountain closed down for a private tour, his convoy was pelted with plastic water bottles.

The incident, which happened over the weekend at Mount Changbai on the border between China and North Korea, is an example of the increasingly brittle relationship between Chinese leaders and the public.

It also shows how unpredictable protests have become. A few years ago, as China’s economic miracle delivered greater prosperity to the vast majority of people, protests tended to be triggered by extreme injustices.
