Harare thief asks for life in Zimbabwe jail because "life in prison is better than life in the streets."

A man convicted of house-breaking in Zimbabwe has asked the judge to jail him for life, state media report.

Lovemore Manyika, 22, wrote a note which was read out in the Harare court, saying: "Life in prison is better than life in the streets."

The Herald newspaper reports that he was disappointed to be only sentenced to three years.

Manyika was released from prison in April after a previous conviction, the paper says.

He broke into two houses in central Harare in July, stealing two mobile phones, a plasma TV and $1,800 (£1,150) in cash.

Six months of his prison term were suspended if he repays $1,956 by 30 September, the paper says. Source...

India needs to stand up to sexual predators...

‘Assam’s night of shame.’ ‘Sex in the City.’ The clichéd headlines abound.

Every newspaper had an article about the young woman stripped and sexually attacked by a mob in Guwahati, Assam, earlier this month. The news was even covered in Britain’s Guardian newspaper.

Assam is an Indian state previously considered safer than places like Delhi. But now statistics have been trotted out claiming that in 2011, Tripura had the most registered cases of crime against women at 37 per cent, with Assam close behind at 36.9 per cent.

It’s easy to see why crimes against women continue unabated. Nothing happens, the perpetrators walk away scot free. There’s almost total impunity.

(...)

It was definitely safer for girls to walk down the street unaccompanied 20 years ago. Yet, why should the culprits get away with sex crimes now, with modern technology available? More police vans are on the streets with mobiles, helplines and hidden cameras.

The answer lies in another cliché: Lack of political will. Often, in Delhi, the perpetrators have political connections. They threaten the constables on duty. Police are often transferred and penalized for taking action against politicians’ sons and their friends. We need a dedicated group of police personnel, trained, motivated and allowed to do their jobs without interference. Full story...

Mangalore police furious with reporter who filmed Hindu extremists beating up partying girls, threaten to "teach him a lesson"

Local TV reporter Naveen Soorinje, who caught on tape the hooliganism at Mangalore's Morning Mist resort on Saturday, is keen on delivering justice to the accused Hindu Jagarana Vedike activists, despite the risk of facing a lockdown in jail.

Soorinje, who is currently facing charges for his alleged unethical reporting, told IBTimes that he won't move the court for anticipatory bail or seek ways to clear the charges against him, saying that he would rather endure difficulties to see that the concerned offenders would be taken into the hands of law.

"It doesn't matter to me that there are complaints filed against me and an FIR has been lodged. I will be happy if the attackers are punished because of the FIR lodged against me. If I am to be freed of these charges because of some pressure and if that is going to benefit the attackers in any way, then I do not need such freedom," Soorinje said.

(...)

In one of his statements on the incident, Soorinje alleged that City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar, who was upset over the media coverage of the incident, warned to teach him a lesson.

"Why should Naveen have reported the incident? I will teach him a lesson," Soorinje cited Seemanth Kumar as saying this to friend and colleague Rajesh Rao, a reporter of TV9.

Soorinje said that Commissioner continued his tirade on the phone saying: "He (Soorijine) not only compared this incident to the Assam incident, but also said that Mangalore is being Talibanized. This time he will be taught a lesson. We will fix him in this case and none of his contacts at any level will be of any help." Full story...

New York writer admits faking Dylan quotes...

A writer for The New Yorker magazine has resigned after admitting he fabricated quotes from singer Bob Dylan in his recent book.

Jonah Lehrer, 31, has come clean over fake statements he quoted from the music legend in his recent book Imagine: How Creativity Works.

Lehrer, a science journalist and author, admitted faking material after being quizzed by Tablet reporter Michael Moynihan following earlier allegations that he had repurposed quotes in several New Yorker blogs.

In a statement released by the book's publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Lehrer acknowledged that "the quotes in question either did not exist, were unintentional misquotations, or represented improper combinations of previously existing quotes". Full story...

Swiss soccer player Morganella 's dive; gets suspended for racist tweet...

Swiss footballer Michel Morganella has been expelled from the London Olympics for posting a racist message on social networking website Twitter.

Swiss Olympic team chief Gian Gilli said Morganella was being stripped of his Olympic accreditation ahead of Switzerland’s final group match against Mexico on Wednesday.

He “discriminated against, insulted and violated the dignity of the South Korea football team as well as the South Korean people”, Gill said through a translator at a news conference on Monday.

Morganella, a defender for Italian club Palermo, posted an offensive and threatening message aimed at South Korean people after Switzerland lost 2-1 to South Korea on Sunday.

Swiss daily Le Matin published images of a tweet from his account, which has since been deleted.

“I’m going to beat up every Korean - they can all go burn. Bunch of mongoloids [trisos – a pejorative French term for people with Down’s syndrome].” Full story...

Top Austrian newspaper photoshops Syrian photo to make situation look worse...

The Kronen Zeitung is Austria's largest newspaper, with a daily readership of around three million people. Yesterday, those readers were treated to the image on the left of war-torn Aleppo, bombed out and desperate. Except, as one sharp-eyed Redditor points out, that wasn't the scene at all. It was just another Photoshop job.

Just to be clear, the family in the photograph is, in fact, in Syria; the original photo (on the right) came from the European Pressphoto Agency. But merely fleeing a city ravaged by guns and mortars apparently isn't quite dramatic enough on its own. The editors of the Krone—as it's commonly called—needed this baby to sing.

Using Photoshop to make actresses and models look unrealistically attractive is bad enough. Using it to make a part of the world that has enough problems as it is look even more apocalyptic? That's just disgraceful. Source + photo...

Singapore woman condemned for feeding the poor...

A woman, who has been cooking food for the needy, has been criticised online, with one netizen even calling for her arrest.

Rachel Lim Yan Xuan, a 34 year-old dance instructor, has been preparing meals and distributing them for free to people begging or selling tissues on the streets of Geylang and outside a temple at Waterloo Street.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, she received flak from netizens after posting photographs of her good deeds on her Facebook account and was forced to stop after her third food distribution two weeks ago.

She said: “Someone threatened me, saying that as I do not have an AVA licence to cook from home for public distribution, and that as giving the food to the poor is [supposedly] illegal, I may end up in jail.”

Ms Lim has been engaged in other charitable works in the past, and decided to start her own soup kitchen as she felt sad seeing the elderly forced to earn a meager living. Full story...

German trainee fined 227,000 euros for illegal Facebook party...

A German court has handed a 20-year-old apprentice a 227,000-euro ($280,000) bill to cover police costs after he organized an illegal party through the Facebook social network in the southern German town of Constance.

The man identified only as Matthias L. told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag that he attended a number of other parties announced on Facebook and got the idea to have an even bigger event at a public beach on the shores of Lake Constance.

The newspaper said thousands had signed up to attend, clicking the 'join' button, but town leaders banned it in advance. Nearly 300 police were dispatched to prevent revelers from gaining access to the beach area. Only about 150 people showed up and eight who refused to leave were detained.

"I had been to some other illegal Facebook parties and thought to myself 'I can do better than this'," Matthias L. told Bild am Sonntag. Full story...

Why Pakistan abandoned its Nobel laureate, Abdus Salam...

The two-room bungalow, the birth place of Pakistan's only Nobel laureate, today stands empty, testament to the indifference, bigotry and prejudice surrounding the country's greatest scientist.

Professor Abdus Salam, the child prodigy born to a humble family on the sun-blasted plains of Punjab who won accolades all over the world for his ground-breaking research in theoretical physics, is all but forgotten.

He was the trailblazer who helped pave the way to the recently hailed discovery of the "God particle" -- one of the greatest achievements in science for the last 100 years -- but as the world went into overdrive, Pakistan stayed largely silent.

Not even boasting from India, whose late physicist Satyendra Nath Bose also contributed to the discovery, snapped Pakistan out of lethargy.

And the reason? Because in the eyes of the law, Salam was a heretic. Full story...

Media covering up gun self-defence stories...

I was talking to a friend recently about the whole Colorado theater massacre. We were lamenting about how our culture is so obsessed with these psychopathic murderers and that we never hear about the heroes, because sadly, in our dying culture, there are no heroes. But maybe we do have heroes; not superheroes, but heroes nonetheless. We just don’t hear about them.

Just recently in Florida, an armed 71-year-old internet cafe patron opened fire with his .380 pistol on two armed thugs attempting to rob the place. Samuel Williams, the aged hero, waited for the right time to shoot. Just as one of the teen bandits’ back was turned, Williams plunged into action, chasing them both out the door with bullets. They were both “beside themselves” as they fell over each other trying desperately to get out the door and away from this crazy old gun-toter (you should see the video; it’s hilarious). The two robbers were hospitalized with gun shot wounds and arrested later on robbery charges.

(...)

How about an agenda? It seems we only see the bad news. We see the murder stories, the armed robbery stories, terrorist attack stories, kidnappings, child molestation, rapes, etc. Yeah, we might see some “heart-warming” story about how a cute kitten was rescued from a tree, but in general, we see mostly bad news. And I think that’s for a reason. It’s to elicit fear in the mind of the viewer and to convince us to live in constant fear of our surroundings. The media try to brainwash us into associating guns with bad people. Don’t you love it when the media show images of the “assailant’s” arsenal all sprawled out on a bed maybe next to a stack of cash (as if those things are inherently evil)? And then they show some scruffy, scowling picture of the alleged “bad guy”. It might even turn out that this bad guy was innocent after all, but it doesn’t matter. Full story...

Philippines birth control: Filipinos want it, priests don't...

Shortly after sunrise, a woman with soulful eyes and short-cropped black hair hurried down a narrow alley in flip-flops, picking her way around clusters of squatting children, piles of trash and chunks of concrete.

Yolanda Naz's daily scramble had begun. Peddling small shampoo packets in the shantytown of San Andres, she raced to earn enough money to feed her eight children.

She went door to door in the sweltering heat, charming and cajoling neighbors into parting with a few pesos. After several hours, she had scrounged enough to buy a kilo of rice, a few eggs and a cup of tiny shrimp.

"My husband and I skip lunch if there is no money," Naz said as she dished rice and shrimp sauce into eight plastic bowls in the 10-by-12-foot room where the family eats and sleeps. Full story...

Egypt's Hosny Mubarak has $70 billion in foreign banks...

Ousted President Hosny Mubarak reportedly has $70 billion in foreign banks according to a report by the Egyptian General Intelligence’s National Security Commission published in the state run newspaper Akhbar-El-Youm on 26 July.

The report claims that Mubarak, using assumed names, transferred EGP 50 billion on 25 January 2011. Most of his money is reported to be in Swiss, American and British banks. The Commission’s report also claims that Mubarak has EGP 35 billion worth of real estate inside Egypt, gained through abuse of influence.

“All of these numbers are estimates and guesses. No one can find how much money the family has,” said Assem Abdul Mo’ty, Honorary Chairman of the Central Accounting Apparatus’ watchdog organisation, Observers Against Corruption.

The report not only touches on Mubarak’s amassed wealth but also on that of his entire family: his wife, Suzanne Mubarak, and their two sons Gamal and Alaa. All of them except for Suzanne are currently behind bars. Full story...

Unmarried couple in Mali stoned to death...

A spokesman for the radical Islamic group controlling northern Mali says a couple who had an adulterous relationship was stoned to death this weekend in the town of Aguelhok.

Sanda Abou Mohamed, a spokesman for the group Ansar Dine, told The Associated Press by telephone on Sunday that the couple was executed according to Shariah law.

A resident of the northern city of Kidal, who had spoken to witnesses in nearby Aguelhok, said the man and woman were buried up to their necks, then pelted with stones until they died earlier Sunday. The resident requested anonymity because he feared for his safety.

Israel stunned by wave of self-immolations...

The second half of July has exposed Israelis to a new and horrifying phenomenon: desperate but mainstream citizens choosing, again and again, to end it all through fire.

So far, there have been seven attempts in the last two weeks, and numerous threats. One man is dead, another clings to life.

The first one came on July 14 at a large Tel Aviv rally commemorating the first anniversary of the Israeli Occupy movement. Moshe Silman, a badly indebted Haifa resident entangled in what the daily newspaper Ha'aretz called "a bureaucratic nightmare," distributed flyers to a few people around him, doused himself with lighter fluid and struck a match.

He was burned over 90 percent of his body. The social justice movement, of which he was a part, waited out the eight-day vigil in shocked silence until he died. Full story...

More than a 100 Kenyan women in Saudi Arabia living in a ... container!

More than 100 Kenyan women are stuck in a container at the country’s embassy in Saudi Arabia, a senior Government officer has revealed.

Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Thuita Mwangi received flak from Kenyans in Britain when he said his ministry had set up a “container” for distressed workers.

The PS was speaking on Saturday at the Kenya Diaspora Conference at the Church House in London. He did not expound on the nature of the container, but added that 30 of the women spend the nights on floors.

A woman in the audience questioned why the Government had refused to return the women to Kenya, instead choosing to harbour them in a container.

Mwangi, however, said the container was set up as a safe transit house after the number of distressed Kenyan workers in Saudi Arabia skyrocketed. Full story...

The rise in women seeking a perfect vagina...

A research charity has launched an animated film hoping it will encourage debate about the surge of women seeking "designer vaginas".

The film called Centrefold, funded by the Wellcome Trust, features three women discussing how labiaplasty - the surgical reduction of the inner labia - has affected them.

Last year more than 2000 labiaplasties were carried out on the NHS, and in the last five years there has been a fivefold increase.

Experts believe the total number is likely to be much higher when considering the unregulated private sector, where the surgery costs upwards of £3,000.

Despite the increase in labiaplasty there are no universal NHS guidelines on the size and shape of normal female genitalia. Full story...

Spain's brain drain has now become a flood as Spaniards flee crisis...

In Spain, the growing crisis — debt, austerity and joblessness — has prompted more people to vote with their feet. In the first six months of 2012, emigration from Spain is up more than 44 percent from the same period last year.

The Spanish government denies it, but the "brain drain" has become something of a flood with more and more educated, skilled Spaniards moving abroad.

Neurobiologist Elisa Cuevas Garcia from Madrid sips an iced espresso on a hot afternoon at an outdoor cafe in Berlin. She works researching a gene that one day might help treat central nervous system disorders, including spina bifida.

The Spanish government subsidized her training, but she left Spain a few years ago for a research post in Berlin where she's finishing up her Ph.D. The 27-year-old says nearly every one of her friends in the sciences has left for work abroad. Full story...

Rude surprise: French fed up with own incivility...

It's a July evening on the terrace of the legendary Cafe Flore. A coiffed woman sips chilled wine, another savors her chocolate eclair.

The one thing to complete a perfect picture of Parisian life? A dash of French rudeness.

It comes from the waiter, who snootily turns away a group of tourists: "There's no point waiting," he shrugs, even though there are many empty tables. "No space outside."

Such rituals of rudeness have long been accepted by visitors as part of the price of enjoying such a beautiful city as Paris. But it seems the French themselves, who over centuries have turned rudeness into an art form, have become fed up with their own incivility, according to recent polls and publicity campaigns.

There's a fabled history of French rudeness from Napoleon, who called the English a "nation of shopkeepers," to former President Nicolas Sarkozy, who infamously snarled at a voter: "Get lost, poor jerk." Full story...

Why the absence of mass oppostion to the rising police state?

One of the most significant political developments in recent US history has been the virtually unchallenged rise of the police state. Despite the vast expansion of the police powers of the Executive Branch of government, the extraordinary growth of an entire panoply of repressive agencies, with hundreds of thousands of personnel, and enormous public and secret budgets and the vast scope of police state surveillance, including the acknowledged monitoring of over 40 million US citizens and residents, no mass pro-democracy movement has emerged to confront the powers and prerogatives or even protest the investigations of the police state.

In the early fifties, when the McCarthyite purges were accompanied by restrictions on free speech, compulsory loyalty oaths and congressional ‘witch hunt’ investigations of public officials, cultural figures , intellectuals, academics and trade unionists, such police state measures provoked widespread public debate and protests and even institutional resistance. By the end of the 1950’s mass demonstrations were held at the sites of the public hearings of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in San Francisco (1960) and elsewhere and major civil rights movements arose to challenge the racially segregated South, the compliant Federal government and the terrorist racist death squads of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The Free Speech Movement in Berkeley (1964) ignited nationwide mass demonstrations against the authoritarian-style university governance.

The police state incubated during the first years of the Cold War was challenged by mass movements pledged to retain or regain democratic freedoms and civil rights.

Key to understanding the rise of mass movements for democratic freedoms was their fusion with broader social and cultural movements: democratic freedoms were linked to the struggle for racial equality; free speech was necessary in order to organize a mass movement against the imperial US Indo-Chinese wars and widespread racial segregation; the shutting down of Congressional ‘witch hunts’ and purges opened up the cultural sphere to new and critical voices and revitalized the trade unions and professional associations. All were seen as critical to protecting hard-won workers’ rights and social advances. Full story...

"Chicken crisis" in Iran becomes simmering political issue...

(...)

He urged television stations to avoid broadcasting images of people eating chicken, saying such pictures could fire up social tensions, with perhaps unforeseen consequences.

“They show chicken being eaten in movies while somebody might not be able to buy it,” he said in mid-July. “Films are now the windows of society and some people observing this class gap might say that we will take knives and take our rights from the rich.”

As far as is known, no one has gone to that extreme, but as Iran’s economy struggles with erratic government management and international sanctions imposed over the country’s disputed nuclear program, prices of food and fuel have jumped across the board in the past 18 months.

Meanwhile, one of Iran’s top-ranking conservative clerics has been doing his part to quell concerns.

“We see that many people are shrieking over the price of chicken. But what’s the worst that can happen if one doesn’t eat it? The overwhelming majority of doctors say that meat products don’t make for good food,” said Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi, according to state media. Full story...

Google gaffe: Search giant fails to delete private Street View data...

Google Inc. says “human error” prevented it from destroying all the private data its Street View vehicles collected in the UK, Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Austria and Australia.

In its letter to the UK privacy regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the search giant reported Friday it still had some data that should have been deleted in December 2010.

“Google has recently confirmed that it still has in its possession a small portion of payload data collected by our Street View vehicles in the UK. Google apologizes for this error,” Peter Fleisher of the company’s Global Privacy Counsel wrote to ICO’s Steve Eckersley, the head of enforcement. “We have determined that we continue to have payload data from the UK and other countries. We are in the process of notifying the relevant authorities in those countries.”

Google has always maintained that the collection of private data was unintentional. But the ICO originally found that such collection was illegal and forced the company to change its procedures. Also, because the UK authority asked for all sensitive data to be deleted and assumed that the company was going to comply, no prosecutions followed. Full story...

Australia repeatedly flouted international law by locking up Indonesian teens in adult jails...

Australia has repeatedly flouted international law by locking up dozens of Indonesian teenagers in adult jails after they arrived as crew members on boats carrying asylum-seekers, according to the country’s Human Rights Commission.

In a damning report released by the commission yesterday, it said police, prosecutors and government officials used a wrist X-ray test to determine the boys’ ages even after the method was widely discredited. As a result, 15 minors were convicted of people-smuggling and incarcerated in adult prisons for nearly three years, while another 48 facing charges were locked up for more than a year.

“If that had happened to Australian children, I think the Australian public would be outraged,” the president of the human rights watchdog, Catherine Branson, QC, said yesterday.

The report’s publication coincided with news that an Australian lawyer, Peter O’Brien, is preparing to seek compensation for two Indonesian teenagers who were locked up in a Sydney jail for six months. The pair, who were 15 and 17 when they were arrested, have alleged that they were sexually abused and forced to take drugs by adult prisoners. Full story...

Angry Chinese in Qidong occupy government office, smash computers in environment protest...

Angry demonstrators occupied a government office in eastern China on Saturday, destroying computers and overturning cars in a violent protest against an industrial waste pipeline they said would poison their coastal waters.

The demonstration was the latest in a string of protests sparked by fears of environmental degradation and highlights the social tensions the government in Beijing faces as it approaches a leadership transition this year.

About 1,000 protesters marched through the coastal city of Qidong, about one hour north of Shanghai by car, shouting slogans against the plan pipeline that would empty waste from a paper factory in a nearby town into the sea.

Demonstrators rejected the government's stand that waste from the factory would not pollute the coastal waters.

"The government says the waste will not pollute the sea, but if that's true, then why don't they dump it into Yangtze River?" said Lu Shuai, a 25-year-old protester who works in logistics. Full story...

" Doctors are like cops: they can be very helpful in some situations, but are inherently dangerous..."

(...)

I would say from my experience and from many studies that far and away the number one danger of medical care in and out of hospitals is misdiagnosis and mistreatment – misprescription, etc.

Doctors don't know their patients, don't know them as whole people in whole life situations, don't know much up-to-date out of their specialties, don't see anything but their narrow specialty as their concern, don't really even know the records of patients they have worked with for many years in most instances. Ignorance is soaring for many reasons. The fifteen minute run-by med. appointment is absurd for dealing seriously with basic causes and preventives, so they rarely try to get to the obvious basics.

(...)

Doctors are like the police: they can be very helpful in some situations, but are inherently dangerous and should be avoided as much as possible. You do not argue with doctors or police and you must be submissive in demeanor at all times. They insist on being called Doctor, even when you have a doctorate and full professorship and are three times their age and they call you "Jack." That name puts you down at the bottom of the totem pole on purpose. You must bow and scrape and say "Yassah, Maasah!" like the slaves did. But be aware they are very often very wrong and dangerous, like slave drivers. Slaves had a secret, underground of knowledge and wisdom and support against the Masters. You must do the same. New drug sold online kills 14 young men in Sweden in one month...

A new drug sold online has caused the deaths of 14 young men in Sweden since the beginning of July, and the Swedish National Institute of Public Health (Folkhälsoinstitutet, FHI) is now attempting a speedy process to ban the drug.

All known victims of the substance 5-IT were men in their twenties, autopsied after the National Board of Forensic Medicine (Rättsmedicinalverket) suspected their deaths were caused by overdoses, wrote national newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

FHI warns of the dangers associated with online drugs.

“Often several different substances have been mixed into the powder or tablets that people buy, without their knowledge. And on chat forums different dosages are recommended. This makes the online drugs deadly,” said FHI’s investigator Anders Persson to the newspaper. Full story...

Oregan man sentenced to jail for collecting rain water on his property...

A rural Oregon man was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in jail and over $1,500 in fines because he had three reservoirs on his property to collect and use rainwater.

Gary Harrington of Eagle Point, Ore., says he plans to appeal his conviction in Jackson County (Ore.) Circuit Court on nine misdemeanor charges under a 1925 law for having what state water managers called “three illegal reservoirs” on his property – and for filling the reservoirs with rainwater and snow runoff.

“The government is bullying,” Harrington told CNSNews.com in an interview Thursday.

“They’ve just gotten to be big bullies and if you just lay over and die and give up, that just makes them bigger bullies. So, we as Americans, we need to stand on our constitutional rights, on our rights as citizens and hang tough. This is a good country, we’ll prevail,” he said. Full story...

South African 12-year-old drowned in boiling water after witnessing parents' murder...

A 12-year-old boy was drowned in boiling water after seeing his mother raped and killed and his father hacked to death by three men who broke into his home south of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Amaro Jose Viana, a South African of Portuguese descent, was first gagged and then drowned because he would have been able to identify his family's assailants, according to court reports.

The sobbing child had been forced to watch as his father Tony Viana, 53, was tied up and assaulted with a panga hunting knife and a golf club before his mother Geraldine was raped and then shot with his father's gun. His father was then also shot dead and the family dog's stomach was cut open.

On Wednesday, Patrick Radebe, 24, the family's gardener, Sipho Mbele, 21, their domestic worker's son, and Sphiwe Motaung, 20, were led back to the cells laughing after Radebe and Mbele pleaded guilty to three charges of murder and one of rape and Motaung pleaded guilty to house robbery charges. Pakistan is 'world leader' in visa application fraud, says British ambassador...

The British high commissioner to Islamabad has risked sparking a diplomatic storm after accusing Pakistanis of being "world leaders" in visa fraud.

During a news conference to publicise the London Olympics, Adam Thomson said UK visa officials had sifted out thousands of forged documents submitted by Pakistanis trying to obtain travel documents for Britain during the past year.

His strong words will anger Pakistanis who are sensitive to allegations that they are visa cheats.

“You are world leaders in the visa fraud business which is why we have to check very scrupulously every single application, every single passport, every single document,” said Mr Thomson, who is usually known for a more mild mannered approach to diplomacy. Full story...

Bhopal victims stage own ‘Olympics’ to protest Dow sponsorship (video + photos)

Dozens of disabled kids affected by the 1984 Bhopal disaster, one of the world’s worst-ever industrial catastrophes, have held their own Games to protest against the London Olympics sponsorship by Dow Chemical.

The children, aged five to 16 and cheered by their nearest and dearest, have participated in 10 sports in Bhopal during the “Special Olympics". The move was aimed to attract attention to the responsibilities of the company, which has a contract with the IOC until 2020 and, in particular, is a sponsor of London Olympics.

Dow Chemical has repeatedly denied any involvement in the tragedy and refuses to add to the $470-million compensation paid out in 1989.

The Bhopal "Olympics" kicked off with children suffering from cerebral palsy, partial paralysis and mental disabilities parading in wheelchairs and walking with the assistance of others around an outdoor stadium in the shadow of the old pesticide plant. Full story...

Singapore's anti-Chinese xenophobia...

It was bad enough that Ma Chi was driving well above the speed limit on a downtown boulevard when he blew through a red light and struck a taxi, killing its two occupants and himself. It didn’t help, either, that he was at the wheel of a $1.4 million Ferrari that early morning in May, or that the woman in the passenger seat was not his wife.

But what really set off a wave of outrage across this normally decorous island-state is the fact that Mr. Ma, a 31-year-old financial investor, carried a Chinese passport, having arrived in Singapore four years earlier.

The accident, captured by the dashboard camera of another taxi, has uncorked long-stewing fury against the surge of new arrivals from China, part of a government-engineered immigration push that has almost doubled Singapore’s population to 5.2 million since 1990. About a million of those newcomers arrived in the past decade, drawn by financial incentives and a liberal visa policy aimed at counteracting Singapore’s famously low birthrate.

“Mainlanders may look like us, but they aren’t like us,” said Mr. Tan, who is of mixed Malay-Chinese descent and does not speak Mandarin. “Singaporeans look down on mainlanders as country bumpkins, and they look down on us because we can’t speak proper Chinese.”

These days, mainland Chinese get blamed for driving up real-estate prices, stealing the best jobs and clogging the roads with flashy European sports cars. Coffee shop patrons gripe that they need Mandarin to order their beloved Kopi-C (coffee sweetened with evaporated milk). True or not, tales of Chinese women stealing away married men have become legion. Full story...

Man in India kicks wife to death for giving birth to second baby girl...

In what appears to be a case of gender bias, a young woman in Coimbatore was killed by her husband allegedly for giving birth to a baby girl for the second time.

According to the victim's family members, twenty-year-old Nagadevi delivered a girl baby 40 days ago. This allegedly resulted in her daily harassment by her husband, Pandiarajan, a driver.

The couple, who reportedly fell in love and married, already have a one-year-old girl child; but the man wanted a baby boy. On Wednesday, the husband, who is known to be an alcoholic, allegedly kicked the young mother in her stomach. The injury resulted in bleeding and she died in hospital yesterday.

Police have arrested her husband of murder and her mother-in-law on charges of abetting murder. The new born girl and her sister Aishwarya are now under the care of their aunt Manjula Devi.

The family says they would fight for justice. Manjula says, "This has happened when Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has launched the cradle baby scheme to save the girl child. We need justice". Source...

Disgraced Barclays "Libor" chief Jerry del Missier awarded £9million bonus...

Barclays was engulfed in scandal again last night after reports emerged of an £8.75m payoff to the most senior executive to authorise the false submission of Libor interest rates. Jerry del Missier resigned last month but is said to have arranged the payoff in the days before his departure. The move stands in stark contrast to a decision by his boss, Bob Diamond, to give up deferred bonus payments worth up to £20m.

Last night a political storm was brewing over the payment, which Barclays repeatedly refused to deny. "We're making no comment," a spokesman said.

A Labour member of the parliamentary inquiry into banking standards, however, said such a payoff would be "totally inappropriate". Andrew Love said: "In the light of the circumstances in which Mr del Missier left Barclays it is totally inappropriate that he should be rewarded with a substantial payoff. Since he was the trusted lieutenant of Bob Diamond you would have thought he would have taken a similar stance to Bob Diamond."

The TUC also reacted with fury. Its general secretary, Brendan Barber, said: "If these figures are true, this takes rewards for failure to a whole new level. The City desperately needs to improve its stock with the British public and excessive payoffs like this won't help one bit. Full story...
